MARCIA! MARCIA! MARCIA!

WOW! What an awesome day of learning! Marcia Tate provided a wealth of strategies to share with your mentees and other teachers in your buildings! What strategies will you try in your classrooms/schools? What will you share with your mentees/colleagues? Did you have an "AHA" moment during your day with Marcia?

  1. I can definitely say I had the most exciting time. I will most definitely use several of the strategies in my classes, such as small celebrations, reduce the consequences that does not work and the remaining 7 strategies of the 20 I do not use, such as music. I will definitely share the book with my mentees and ask my principal is there money in the budget to order more for the data room in our school. My biggest "AHA" moment is that a lot of the disorders/conditions I see in some of the kids in my class. I will try to be more calm with these students and form a wealth of strategies that I can put in their behavioral plans.

    1. Tawana,

I agree that this was exciting and I too, plan to celebrate more in the class on all and any improvements.

You mention the disorders/conditions we discussed in class. The two extrme ones conduct & oppositional disorder (I think that's what they were called)are nearly impossible for us as teachers to treat, so we basically have to find ways to put a band-aid on these wounds. But at least Marcia gave us ways to "treat" the students with these disorders while they are in our classes.

  2. As I reflect on the information that we learned today, I realize that I am doing a lot of things right. However, there is much room for improvements. I am excited about trying celebrations, using music, incorporating movement, and having the students hear the information 3 times.

I cannot wait to share many of these strategies with my mentees!! I would like for them to get a copy of the book and to get a copy for the teacher resource section in our media center.

    1. Jennifer,

I agree. I feel as if I'm doing everythig correct and Marcia reconfirmed it in the workshop. This was a great day of learning and I would recommend all new teachers need to see Marcia in action. Her activities were engaging and awesome. Since I'm a special education teacher, I loved the session on disorders. I will definitely determine if Title 1 funds can allow me to purchase the book for all new teachers...it is so needed in the classroom. The music made it really interesting.

  3. Can we say great day in education! Yesterdays session was so engaging, helpful and refreshing! I learned so much new information, as well as enhanced some things I was already doing in my clasroom. I was already utilizing music, but now I have some new musical resoources. I can't wait to try the celebrations, as well as incorporating the 20 strategies. I also, can't wait to read and use the book Shouting won't grow dendrites!

    1. Yesterday was a day well spent. It has been a long time since I have been to a PD and come away with such excitement and renewal. Marcia Tate was awesome! I wish ALL teachers in MCSD could hear her speak. So much of what she said resonated with me. It was simple and not complicated to carry out. I did indeed have an aha moment or two or three! I am already using a lot of the strategies she discussed, but there is always room to implement more and adapt some. I can't wait to dig into her book and I have already ordered the parenting book for myself. The strategies she discussed not only apply to my career, but can make a big difference in my homelife as well. Renewed and ready for Monday!

  4. I must agree with you: IT WAS AN AWESOME DAY OF LEARNING. Here are some things that I have immediately taken with me to use in my classroom (and at home with my own children:
1). Give affirmations! I plan to give more affirmations to my students, coworkers, and family in order to naturally boost levels of seratonin!

2). Incorporating more music and movement and directly relating it to the objectives being taught. I plan to immediately teach the line segment, ray, and line body movements she showed us.

3). Continue to go "grouping" or "families." Currently, I use a "houses" system of grouping where students are in a "house". However, now I think I may start calling them "Families" because it helps to foster a sense of belonging and unity.

An "AHA" moment occurred when I shared with her that my son is having difficulty liking school and behaving with other students. When Marsha asked me, "Did he have any problems last year?" And I say, "NO, never since he's been in school." She immediately said, "What's changed?" Something has changed for him to behave this way." We were able to discover what has happened/changed and take steps to correct it.

Thanks for bringing Dr. Marsha Tate to Columbus, GA!! Now if I could only find a way to get her Russell County Schools!

  5. I was facinated with the multiple techniques to keep the students engaged. I really liked the music review activity that we used. I have already shared this with many teachers in the building and I think it will be an effective and fun way to conduct review.

  6. I really enjoyed the workshop. I have already put some of the strategies to use in my classroom. My classroom will be a more engaging place due to what I learned. Thanks for the opportunity to meet such a exciting and engaging trainer!

  7. Okay...WHEW! I don't even know where to start with this. Dr. Marcia Tate is great at what she does. My favorite part was when she said "Use your voice for teaching and not for classroom management" and "If the students get louder, then you get quieter." So many times I hear teachers yelling at the students and I'm always thinking to myself, "does it really take all that?" That was an "AHA" moment for me. I gave my entire team a "Smile on a Stick" and a poem to go along with it, and even if they were having a bad day, they smiled and/or laughed at the BIG grin they received. The main thing that I am going to use is to try to say something positive everyday to my "case study". Hopefully, that will encourage them to behave in a more positve manner. She motivated me so much within those 6 hours! I loved it!

  8. I really enjoyed Marcia's dynamic presentation. It is definitely one that I wish all teachers could experience. Our next department meeting will have a special presentation by me. I will share them how important brain function is in how we relate to our students to provide them the positive reinforcement they need on a daily basis. There were so many great ah-ha moments that I cannot list them all. It was a day well spent and I will start moving and celebrating in my classroom as much as possible. Fantastic!

  10. I really enjoyed the class. I learned so much. My favorite thing was the music. I bought a cd called, Dr. Jean All Day Long. Now we have a song for everything! We have songs for lining up, getting ready for lunch, cleaning up, packing up, etc... The kids love it and so do I. Thank you Marcia!

  11. I also really enjoyed the class with Dr. Tate. Many of the ideas and strategies I can really understand how they will work in the classroom. A few strategies that I will implement is the musical parterners and how to enhance the learning environment with lighting and scents.

  12. Dr. Marcia Tate just keeps getting better each time I see her! There is indeed power in the brain-compatible teaching strategies, as we witnessed during this TSS session. Every moment of the day was inspiring and made me reflect on why I love this profession. The resources that she shared are practical and so engaging. Thanks Betsy and the PL Team for providing a wonderful day of training!

  14. You know as veteran teachers, we tend to do things instinctively without giving it much thought. When a student misbehaves we take steps to handle the problem then move on with our lessons. We never really think about what we did or how we did it so when someone comes and ask us about how to handle a situation it can be difficult to explain. Marcia’s workshop helps us to stop and think about effective classroom management so we can explain it to our mentees. I know personally there have been times when my mentee has come to me with a question about classroom management & I have had a difficult time explain things to her. Marcia broke down the strategies and organized things in a way that I was able to easily explain strategies when asked about specific problems.

  15. Wow!!! Seeing Marcia Tate was a real treat!! I was so impressed by the strategies and inspiration she provided us during our training. I love all of the music she uses to cue students when to transition. I love music but don't use enough of it. I plan on painting my classroom this summer to give it a more homey feel and hope that will help keep the atmosphere in my classroom calm. I have already starting giving my student more encouragement and on mornings I'm not running late, I meet them at the door and they can't enter until I have received a hug from them. THEY LOVE THIS!!! Plus, it makes me feel good, too. Even the ones that come in late come to my desk to get their hug before they put their stuff away. It's an AMAZING feeling of love and family!!!!

  16. All I can say is, "Wow!!". I have NEVER been to a more worthwhile, engaging professional development workshop. I came away from it feeling like everything she said made sense, was EASY to implement, and would improve learning.

One of the strategies I gained was the importance of considering how the brain learns and all the things the body needs to help the brain learn. It makes me really think about the activities/lessons I plan for my kids, my classroom environment, rules and procedures.

  17. This was one of the best classes I have attended since becoming a teacher. Every time we have a training, they always tell us it will adapt to my type of class (not academic), but they can never give examples. I feel the things Marcia Tate delivered in her presentation and book are truly universal to all teachers. She was so energetic. It was a great experience to see her.

  18. Dr. Tate was amazing. This is probably the best training I have ever had. So many of the things I already knew but in the busy life of a teacher i either forgot them or needed renewal. My spirit was rejuvenated.

  19. I really enjoyed the day with Marcia Tate. What a great way to teach us some management strategies not only in our classrooms but in our personal lives. I appreciate PL bringing Marcia in to teach us and SHOW us how it is done. I enjoyed using music to get us out of our seats and also review concepts we had been taught. What a great way to motivate and teach at the same time!

  20. I enjoyed our day with Marcia Tate. She came to Ft. Benning aboout 10 years ago and I can still remember doing some of the brain activities she did with us. She really made us think about our students and all the 'stuff' they bring with them to class. As teachers, we need to do everything we can to make a comfortable and caring learning environment. She stressed how important it is to teach the 'child' before teaching the standards. Learning will occur when our students feel loved.

  21. I enjoyed my day with Marcia Tate. The day went by very quickly and it was fun. I have a lot of information to share with my mentee. I definitely believe in the brain base learning and I have starting using some of the strategies in my class already.

Some interesting information for the new teachers. Glad I have more tools to use in helping with the new teachers. Unfortunately, these kinds of presenttions often overlook the teacher side of the equation. How much of the problem you kids are having are created, by me the the teacher, or the teacher they just left. It is the interraction that is often crucial for correcting problems. No silver bullets.

  23. Marcia Tate was awsome. I have learned over the years that shouting does not work with teaching students with different learning styles. Marcie just really put a great lesson to that for me. I have already made me some CD that my students have enjoyed. I am using the elements of color, music and seating in my classroom now and in my mentee classroom. Next school year I will add lighting and the aroma. Great ideas on celebrations and simple affirmations. Glad I am in this training. All teachers need for from year to year to refresh our self.

  24. I was so impressed that I immediately tried the music and activities in my next days class. They worked like a charm and I shared them with my mentee and several teachers in the school.

I really enjoyed listening to Marcia Tate speak. Her strategies reallu pin point sevral of the "problems" most teachers deal with on a daily basis with student bahavior. Her strategies are precise. You can find a strategy that will connect to most all situations in the classroom. I know I "tabbed" several stratgies in my book to remind myself. I hope to revise and implement some of the things in my own classroom next year. She was fantastic!

Dr. Marcia Tate is remarkable!I have been exposed to many workshop presenters during my professional career. But I have never met one so dynamic, insightful, and charismatic. She confirmed my stance on Aristotle's classic quote: "We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." What I didn't know was that, to develop a habit (good or bad), the brain must be rehearse the activity 21 times. I shall use that strategy at the beginning of the school year when I am trying to establish positive routines and procedures. I also loved her input about including lots of music and movement in the Work Session. I shall use both in my teaching methodology. I already have been sharing these and other Marci Tate techniques with my mentee. She loves them, and I do, too!

Exciting and energetic! The information presented was easy to implement in the classroom. Having students serve as the door greeter for a week was a very interesting idea and I found it to be innovative. Sharing the ideas with my mentee was also exciting. Having students move around during the 90 minute session was very helpful and served to increase focus was the feedback. Playing music during the work session was an idea that was already in practice and appreciated hearing the endorsement.
